Subtraction Worksheet Generator

Generate printable subtraction worksheets where the answer is never negative, at four difficulty levels from 1-digit to 4-digit numbers.

Every problem is built with the larger number on top, so students practice borrowing (regrouping) without meeting negative numbers before they are ready. Includes an optional answer key and a fresh random sheet on every click.

Every problem has a non-negative answer — no borrowing into negative numbers. Turn on the answer key to print a teacher copy.

  1. Pick a difficulty level, from 1-digit up to 4-digit numbers.
  2. Pick the number of problems (12 to 40).

  5. Click Print — the sheet prints clean black on white.

The formula

Each problem subtracts the smaller number from the larger, a − b with a ≥ b, so answers are always zero or positive.

Worked example

On the 2-digit setting, a typical problem is 83 − 47, and the answer key shows 36. Problems that need borrowing, like this one, appear naturally throughout the sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there no negative answers?

Subtraction worksheets for elementary grades use the convention that you subtract the smaller number from the larger one. Building every problem that way keeps the focus on borrowing skills; negative numbers get their own worksheets in later grades.

How do I get the answers?

Tick the "Answer key" box and the differences appear on the sheet, on screen and in print. Print one copy with the key for grading and one without for the student.

What level covers borrowing across zeros?

The 3-digit and 4-digit levels regularly produce cases like 503 - 278, where borrowing has to cross a zero. The 2-digit level covers ordinary two-digit borrowing.

Can I make a sheet with more problems?

Yes — choose 30 or 40 problems for a full practice page, or 12 for a quick warm-up or exit ticket.
