Fraction Worksheet Generator

Generate printable fraction worksheets: add and subtract fractions with same or different denominators, plus a level with all four operations.

Level 1 shares a denominator so students learn the basic move, level 2 mixes denominators to force finding a common one, and level 3 adds multiplication and division. Every answer in the key is reduced to lowest terms, and improper results are written as mixed numbers.

All answers in the key are reduced to lowest terms, with improper results written as mixed numbers.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose a level: same denominator, different denominators, or all four operations.
  2. Choose 8 to 20 problems.
  3. Click New Sheet for a fresh random set.
  4. Tick "Answer key" to show reduced answers on the sheet.
  5. Click Print to produce the worksheet.

The formula

a/b + c/d = (a*d + c*b) / (b*d), and a/b / c/d = (a*d) / (b*c). Results are divided by the greatest common divisor of numerator and denominator to reduce them.

Worked example

A level-3 problem is 2/3 x 3/4: multiply across to get 6/12, then reduce by the common divisor 6 to reach 1/2 — the answer the key shows. An addition example is 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the answers always reduced?

Yes. The key reduces every result to lowest terms, and if the result is an improper fraction it is written as a mixed number — for example 7/4 appears as 1 3/4. Students should be expected to do the same.

When do unlike denominators appear?

Level 1 keeps one shared denominator per problem. Level 2 mixes denominators from 2 to 12 for addition and subtraction, which is where the least-common-denominator skill is practiced. Level 3 adds multiplication and division on top.

Do subtraction problems ever go negative?

No. When a subtraction problem is generated, the larger fraction is placed first, so every difference is zero or positive — appropriate for elementary and middle-school practice.

Which grades are these for?

Level 1 fits grade 4, level 2 fits grade 5, and level 3 (all four operations) fits grades 5-6, following the usual fractions progression.

How does the answer key print?

Tick "Answer key" — answers appear on the same sheet in the same positions, so one print run gives you a grading copy identical to the student sheets.
